The Death of the Sidebar

For two decades, the right-hand sidebar was the dumping ground of web design. It housed newsletter signups, "Related Posts" algorithms, flashing display ads, and tag clouds.
As mobile traffic eclipsed desktop, the sidebar was violently pushed to the bottom of the page, revealing its true nature: it was never structural, it was merely parasitic.
We must design singular, focused columns of text. If secondary content is necessary, it must be integrated conceptually via marginalia or progressive disclosure, not shoved into a generic container on the right.
