The Interface of Attention

The modern web is an engine of distraction. We are abandoning deep reading in favor of scanning, endless scrolling, and fractured attention. But interface design is not neutral. It is structural rhetoric.

When we design for engagement, we get addiction. When we design for comprehension, we get something else entirely.

The Metric of Time

Analytics platforms measure "Time on Page." This is a crude instrument. A user might spend five minutes on a page because they are deeply engrossed in a complex argument, or because they are hopelessly lost in a labyrinthine navigation system. The metric does not distinguish between flow and friction.

Typography as Infrastructure

We often treat typography as paint applied to the structural walls of the interface. This is backward. In text-heavy environments, typography is the infrastructure. The line length dictates the rhythm of the eye. The leading dictates the pace. The contrast dictates the stamina.

We must return to the principles of editorial design, adapting them not to mimic print, but to leverage the specific affordances of the digital medium.
